Primary Care Manager Career Development Framework
NHS England released a new framework, in Feb 24, outlining career development opportunities for primary care managers. It covers core competencies for different roles in management, and is a resource to be used to infomr appraisals and personal development plans.

Career Stages
Based on NHS England Framework

Early Careers
Defined as the the first 5 years of working in primary care management, or having worked for first five years in an equivalent role but transitioning to Primary Care, i.e Service Manager in an acute trust to management in primary care.

Late Careers
Defined as those who have met all the competencies and have the years of experience to start providing guidance to others on Primary Care Management.

Established Careers
Defined as five or more years experience in working in operational or management role in primary care or in an equivalent role

End of Career
Those who are ready to leave Primary Care management, including new careers and retirement.
Entry Routes to Primary Care Management
The Diagram below is taken from the NHS Primary Care Management Career Development Framework document. Highlighting the types of roles available across the different stages of Primary Care Management. In this section we want to highlight the entry routes into Primary Care Management for those who aspire to pursue this as a career.
The most common route is to develop experience from entry route roles like reception through to taking on leadership roles, like team leader or reception manager, then progressing to Assistant/Deputy Practice Manager. This route can be expedited through undertaking training courses, i.e Apprenticeships, ILM/CMI Qualifications.
Apprenticeships can help to develop the skills for individuals to then take on a management post qualification. Some of the appropriate Apprenticeships include;

- Finance Management
- Healthcare Management
